How to Care for Your Embroidered Pakistani Outfit

How to Care for Your Embroidered Pakistani Outfit

A well-made embroidered outfit can be worn for many years, as long as it is looked after. These tips will help yours stay beautiful.

Always check the care label

Fabrics and embellishments differ from one outfit to the next, so the care label and any product notes come first. When in doubt, choose professional dry cleaning for heavily embroidered pieces rather than washing at home.

Wearing it

  • Put on your outfit before perfume, hairspray and make-up, to keep them off the fabric.
  • Be careful with jewellery and bags that can snag delicate embroidery or net.
  • Avoid sitting on rough surfaces, which can pull threads.

Cleaning

Spot clean small marks gently with a clean, damp cloth rather than rubbing. For anything bigger, take the outfit to a dry cleaner who is used to embroidered clothes, and point out the embellishment.

Storing it

  • Hang the outfit in a breathable garment bag, not plastic.
  • For very heavy pieces, fold with acid-free tissue paper rather than hanging, so the weight does not stretch the fabric.
  • Keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.

Pressing

If it needs pressing, turn the outfit inside out, use a low heat, and place a cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Never press directly on beads, sequins or metallic thread.
